Weekend Fundays!
Columbia had a lot of fun stuff going on this weekend that I would like to share with you all.
1. Movies at the Park
Awaken Church hosted their annual Movies at the Park event at North Springs Park. They really outdid themselves this year, especially with the organization of the event. They held it in a gated area at a baseball field. Upon entering the gate, someone offered us bug spray, and they had a lot of it. Which, if you have lived in Columbia, or South Carolina for that matter, for an extended period of time during the summer, you know is so necessary. Those mosquitos have me wanting to tear off my skin sometimes.
Then they had a registration table where we received a card to enter in to a drawing, and they handed out some little baggies containing three color coded tickets, one for drinks, one for popcorn, and one for a sno cone. After that, basically, it was fair game. I took my three kids and two neighbor kids, so of course the older kids vanished into the bounce houses. My boys, almost two and three, had to be coaxed into the smallest of bounce houses. My youngest son spent the whole time in my arms, except when I got him a sno cone; then he was happy to stand still eating it.
Although I did not get to visit every booth/station out there, I noticed they had face painting, a stand where you could buy glow sticks, and a basketball hoop for the little ones. They also had an organization out there who had these free planters of various vegetables such as zucchini, peas, watermelon, herbs, and tomatoes. They encouraged everyone to fill up a bag and take them home and plant them. It was a really neat thing to have out there.
Once it became dark, we all retired to our chairs and blankets and watched Big Hero 6. I really wish I had taken a picture of how everything looked with the big screen out there and everyone sitting around it. It was an awesome experience.
2. Summer Celebration of Water
River front Park opened their doors to the public for a free event supporting water. They had water slides, water sports, water, and a lot of other stuff going on. I was late so I did not get to take part in most of what they had. My daughter and I spent the entire time there on the river. We got on a couple of boards that looked like surf boards with a paddle, and paddled around the river. I did not get to take pictures of us paddling because I did not want my phone to get wet. At first, I did not want to get on the board because I was afraid of falling in to the water, and believe me when I tell you many people fell, but I wound up getting on one anyway. And guess who fell in- my daughter. She was soaking wet.
Although I did not get to participate in everything, I did take pictures, especially of Naruto and his crew who came out to support the celebration. Okay, so I was geeking out a little bit, but come on, it's Naruto!
