Hair Journey Blog 2

I am hoping to update my blog soon so I can separate everything by category. For now though these titles will have to do. As I stated in my previous blog, I came across a hair challenge on Wura's Secret Hair blog that I wanted to take on in order to make my hair healthy and to help it grow.
This particular challenge has 8 steps that I will list here.

1. Get a trim.  I actually trimmed a little bit on Sunday before I re-twisted it, but I am sure it was not enough. I am hoping to have someone really give it a good trim this week because I have no idea what I am doing.

2. Do a pre-shampoo or hot oil treatment before washing and conditioning your hair. I am not sure what a pre-shampoo is, I will have to research that later. But what I did was I mixed coconut oil, olive oil, and castor oil together and ran it through my hair. Then I put on a shower cap. I had intended to leave it in for a couple of hours and then wash it out. However, I was also doing my kids' hair that day (three heads people, three heads!! All washed, conditioned, oiled, braided, and in my daughter's case, twisted,) so I wound up sleeping in the shower cap with the oil in my hair and washing it out the next day.

3. Wash and Condition your hair every one or two weeks. I just co-washed with conditioner since I washed and conditioned my hair the week prior. Someone also told me they thought the oil was supposed to go on after I washed my hair, this is all so confusing, so I didn't want to wash it wash it and possibly lose all the benefits from doing the oil treatment in the first place. (If anyone knows the proper procedure, please tell me in the comments below.)

4. Moisturize and seal your hair daily (or every other day). I am not 100% sure what this means. I will have to go back to the blog and click on the links she added. I was really in a hurry to just wash my hair and get it twisted so I did not take the time to do all the research before hand. But that is okay, I can update it in future blog posts. What I did though was after rinsing out the conditioner, I took a mixture of olive oil and coconut oil and rubbed it through my hair while it was still wet.

5. Oil your scalp every other day with an oil of your choice. She then lists some oils to use. Another friend of mine said in the summer months you should use a light oil and in the winter months use a heavier oil. So for the summer months I will focus on olive oil and coconut oil, then when it gets colder I will do a mixture of castor oil and shea butter.

6. Keep your hair in buns, french twists, wigs, and other protective styles to retain length at least 5 times a week. I will mostly be doing the two stranded twists, which from my understanding is a protective hair style. I am kind of lazy, so I will keep them in all week unless I want to do a twist out.

7. Says do not use any heat on your hair to dry or style it such as flat irons or blow dryers. Roller setting is allowed.  I included this step for those of you who actually use heat. I do not own a flat iron, or a curling iron. I don't even use my blow dryer, though I will be using my hair dryer for conditioning purposes. I hope to one day get a flat iron, but it can wait for now. I really want an instyler, anyone know if that works???

8. Do the green house effect method on your hair once or twice a week. This is actually what I did the first night only I think the amount of oil I used was more than what she is suggesting. She says to put some oil in your hair and then cover it with a plastic cap and a satin scarf and sleep with it on over night. Your hair should feel damp but not wet in the morning. You can actually just style your hair as usual in the morning. I will probably do this on my daughter's hair tomorrow since her hair seems to be getting dry already even though I oiled it again this morning.

That is pretty much it. I am looking forward to taking part in the challenge and seeing how it benefits my hair. If you have any comments or suggestions, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.
