Why do babies feel the need to throw food on the floor?

This morning my son and I were sitting in the kitchen enjoying our breakfast, or so I thought. I made a tuna fish salad for myself and gave him a boiled egg. He seemed to really enjoy the egg. Once he was finished, I gave him some potatoes, carrots, and beef chunks from some beef stew we had the night before. He happily munched on those as well, so I returned to my meal. Then low and behold, when I looked to see how he was coming along, he had thrown maybe half the contents of his meal on the floor! But he was still eating!

Obviously he enjoyed the food, or he wouldn't still be eating it. But what made him want to throw it on the floor? Following is a list of my best guesses:

1. He thought the floor was hungry and decided to share his meal.
2. He was trying to save a snack for later. (personally I really think this is it)
3. He has an imaginary puppy whom he was trying to feed on the floor.
4. He couldn't stand the fact that I had just swept and mopped the floors and had to dirty them again.
5. He just had to see if gravity still worked.

It was so funny, at one point it seemed like he snuck a piece of potato in his hand, and dropped it casually on the floor hoping I wouldn't notice.

This is a picture of MD happily eating his food:

Yum, this is good!

Here's the food he was trying to save for later:

I know it's not much, but seriously. I had just cleaned the floors.
