My kid poops plastic, what does yours do?
OK, so I was reading Today Moms a while back and they had a segment where moms talked about some of the mistakes and accidents they had with their kids. And I was like, “I don’t have any interesting stories to tell.” Now I realize I inadvertently had quite a few stories to tell and they aren’t the kinds I want. But I will go ahead and get some of this stuff off my chest anyway, starting with the most recent.
As you know, yesterday was New Years; the day before that New Year’s Eve. My church had a New Year’s party so my husband and I took the kids (our 9 year old daughter, and 10 month old son). We were out there from about 7pm-10pm. My son did not fall asleep at all; even though he was rubbing his eyes like he was tired. But I guess he didn’t want to miss anything. Well, you know how they say your kids can turn into monsters when they are over tired; yeah, he did that.
He didn’t turn into a monster exactly, but he was dead set on not sleeping, at least not in his bed. And even when he was in my bed he kept tossing and turning and whining so much, I couldn’t get any sleep. So the next morning, New Year’s Morning, he actually gets up all happy again as if he had a good night’s rest. My husband and I, not so happy.
But even his happy state didn’t last long. He quickly became one of the whiniest children you ever want to meet. I mean seriously, he was whining all day yesterday. When he finally went for his nap we had two hours of peace, but once he woke up, the monster returned. He has two teeth coming in right now which may have something to do with him being extra fussy, but I am wondering if it was something he ate. Today, when my mother in law changed his diaper, she found plastic in his stool.
What on earth? We vacuum the carpet and sweep religiously, and everyone, including the 9 year old, keeps an eye on him. Yet, there you go, plastic in his stool. If only that were all, yesterday, under mommy’s (that’s me) watch, he fell off the couch. I am usually so good at keeping an eye on him, but I looked away for a second, I think to put a plate down, and it looked like he literally nosedived off the couch. Of course I was freaking out, but he doesn’t seem any worse for the wear.
My husband and I have a joke about “Father of the Year” (you need to check out this article about this dad taking photos of his daughter doing dangerous things for a calendar called World’s Best Father-everything is photo shopped). We joke that if something happens to one of the kids, it’s because we are running for “Father/Mother of the year”. So yesterday I got four points, and the day I sat our son in the stroller without the strap all the way buckled was another four points because he reached down to grab something and fell out.
My husband actually started it off. When our son was about 2 months old, maybe a little older, he accidentally knocked a pale off the dresser and it clunked our son in the head. I thank God He made us so resilient. When you think about all the things our bodies go through, it’s amazing how quickly we can recover and what we can endure.
I am grateful that my daughter has never had a broken bone, even though she tried hard for one one day in a skating accident. It’s actually surprising considering when she was about 2, she decided she wanted to be an acrobat and would climb up on the top of a couch and launch herself in the air. I was always there to catch her. You guys wouldn’t believe the flips and things she does now on the monkey bars, she really does have a gymnastic gift.
My son on the other hand, not so much. I can’t remember my daughter having so many incidences. But it just goes to show, no matter how careful you are, or think you are, accidents will happen. That’s why it’s so important to stay prayed up; seriously. I know God is keeping my children.
