A leader’s first responsibility is to her people: Trumps address to the U.N.

Trump addresses the United Nations

Today, President Trump addressed the United Nations and plotted out his future for America and his hope for the world Nations. It was the first time I was impressed by our new leader. I don’t know who wrote Trump’s speech, but he delivered his message well, and it was clear. The United States will stand against her enemies.

It was amazing to hear President Trumps call for unity while at the same time denouncing those who oppress their people. President Trump called out a few countries: Cuba, North Korea, Venezuela, Syria, Afghanistan, and Iran. He asked for the leaders of all countries to put their people first, but also to think of the world as a whole when we look at the regimes who oppress and attack their own people.

For years the United States has taken it upon itself to police the world. According to the President, we give 22% of financial aid to the UN, greater than any other country, but, as the President implied, without the support of surrounding nations, this figure could change.

However, I could not help but notice that he seemed to ignore America’s part in the global unrest. He talked about Isis and Alqaida as enemies, but not many years ago, it was America who supplied these regimes with weapons and even trained the fighters. Although I agreed with his stance that America will show strength to her enemies, I wondered at the seeming contradiction that we had something to do with their creation.

It is the duty of a country’s leader to look out for the best interests of its people. The United States has made many enemies in her quest to achieve peace and prosperity for her people. As a country, we have destroyed others for our own gain. Yet, we cannot make up for our past transgressions. Our only hope is to move forward and make peace with those countries who desire peace, and work together with other nations of the world to ensure this peace remains.

I don’t know what the future holds for America. Kim Jong seems intent on continuing his show of nuclear force with his missile exercises. In response, the US has begun training exercises of their own with South Korea. It seems we are at the brink of another war unless the nations of the world come together to censure, or condemn those nations who try to use nuclear warfare for their own personal gain.

It is my hope that the nations of the world see the seriousness of nuclear warfare and the threats these nations hold not only against the U.S., but to the world as a whole. We cannot survive as a people unless we see ourselves as one body, all a part of the human race. It is this revelation that will pave a brighter tomorrow.

What do you think: Did you see Trumps speech? Did you agree with what he said?
