Student Council Secretary
My daughter is in the third grade this year and decided she would go out for Student Council. She wanted to be President or Vice President, but only 5th and 4th graders can hold those positions so she settled for Secretary. My daughter is very outgoing and a natural born leader, though some may call her bossy. In kindergarten her teacher recognized her natural leadership abilities and made her a classroom leader. After a while she had to take the leadership position away because my daughter became too bossy.
That character trait has never really left her over the years. She is always the classroom helper but she gets in trouble with her classmates on occasion because they think she is trying to tell them what to do, because she is. Regardless, I thought Student Council would be great for her. I figured it would help her be more responsible and may help her to be more respectful.
In order to run for Student Council she had to get 3 references of her choice. They had to answer questions about how trustworthy, honest, respectful, responsible she is. My daughter chose a close friend of the family to answer the questions and we all had a good time going through the character traits because unfortunately, my daughter does not quite exibit these traits, to put it lightly. He tried to focus more on her behaviour at school than at home so he could say something positive.
After that was done, she was accepted along with two other children in 3rd grade. Since they were going to have an election she had to write a speach. We spent another night working on her speach and focusing on her positive qualities such as she is very caring and kind towards others and she likes to talk. Putting these qualities together, she is running on a platform that says she will make sure the needs of the 3rd graders are heard in Student Council.
Next came poster making. I spent hours helping her to make the posters below.
The next morning when she was supposed to take them to school, this happened to the orange sign.
If you can see at the bottom of the poster it says honest and trustworthy. Honestly, when I wrote those words, I felt kind of funny about it because those words do not often describe my daughter. So really, I think it's for the best that the poster was damaged.

It's great that she already has the drive to be outgoing and stand out from her peers. She's going to be great one day. I can't believe she's already in the 3rd grade! I've only seen her a handful of times since she was born.
